UMENCO: This year, for Mother’s Day, I’ll be…
Angela Briggs:…enjoying quality time with my son Thomas and our dog Lucy. I think we might go for a kayak at Point Piper, Sydney. This mother’s day will be a quiet one compared to previous years, where I celebrated by watching clients Aje in 2019 and CAMILLA AND MARC in 2018 open at MBFW, but the light in all of this is that we’re afforded much more bonding time as a family.

My sanctuary is…
Angela Briggs: Gertrude & Alice in Bondi. This independent café bookstore has become a special space for Thomas and I; a much-loved nook to relax and take a quiet moment in our daily routines. After a chai and time with a book, we like to head down to the beach for an ocean swim – time spent in the water is important to us.

A mother I admire is…
Jane Turner, who owns Gertrude & Alice. Over the years that I’ve been visiting her store, I have come to admire her approach to running a business, and value her warmth as a friend. Her love for the Bondi community, and her kindness to customers and incredible knowledge of literature has seen Gertrude and Alice achieve a loyal following. Jane has been awarded the Bondi Businesswoman of the Year Award which highlighted how much the community supports local family-run businesses.

A collage by Thomas.

To me, motherhood means…
Joining an incredible community of women to create a better future for our children. It’s often said that it takes a village to raise a child, and Thomas and I are lucky to have amazing friends and support networks. This support I have received from the women in my life has eased the challenges of being a parent, offered me light and humour in challenging moments, and made me value the spirit of community. In particular, Thomas’s grandmother Brenda has been a mentor to me, and helped shape Thomas into the wonderful, confident person that he is today. As a mum, I try to provide Thomas with a foundation of love, kindness and respect. We are a team.

Being a working mother in the fashion industry is…
Not without its challenges, but ultimately, rewarding. I’m grateful to be surrounded by many inspiring mums working in the fashion industry. Running a company and raising a child in tandem was never going to be easy, but that way we support each other and lift each other up is important.

My dream mother’s day gift is…
A Saskia Wilson print, I love her Australian landscapes.
